Paying attention to the meanings and thinking about the word of God

The Holy book of Allah on verse 22 of chapter Mozamel has invited all Muslims to regularly recite the Quran and has countered a lot of benefits for it. Therefore it is recommended that all Muslims spend some times reciting the Quran daily. But our responsibility is not completed yet unless we think about the meaning behind verse and chapters.

The Importance of Thinking about the meanings of Quran

In chapter Saad Verse 29 we read: “(Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition”

This verse teaches all Muslims to think and meditate on the verses of Quran and prepare themselves for applying the rules and teachings in their life and actions. It is essential for a reciter to concentrate his thoughts on the meaning before starting to read. Understanding the teachings are the first step in order to applying them in our actions and becoming better Muslims.
Emam Ali (a): there is not that much of benefit in reciting without thinking.

Keys to thinking about the Quran
1- Using the translated Qurans, you can read the meanings. If you know Arabic, you can read the meaning of one verse before reading the verse or if you are going to read a couple pages read the meaning of those pages first then recite the verses in Arabic.

2- Tartil Recitation: it means reading the Quran as slow as you can understand the meanings and have enough time to think about them. Your Goal should not be finishing the chapter as fast as you can rather understanding one verses might be more important than finishing a chapter without understanding a word. As our beloved prophet Muhammad said: recite the Quran with patience and don’t recite it how you recite poetry. Stop and think about the phenomena’s and purify your hearts with it. And none of you must set his intentions for finishing the chapter.

3- Barrier against Sin: Allah (swt) in chapter 47 verse 24 says: “Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them?” Quran is a book of guidance for all human being and human will be guided through studying and acting the Quran. But as Allah mentions, Sin will put a lock on the doorway of our hearts. One way to fight this disease is reciting and thinking about verses of Quran.
